For you moms out there in the trenches raising your kids - do you ever dream your child will then write a book about his or her "raising"? Neither did I but I'm glad he did! Knox was always funny/sarcastic and I'm thrilled he has now found a way to make a living doing that! This book will evoke all kinds of emotions (in a good way) and the footnotes are hilarious. His dad and I (after we "stepped outside of our Judeo-Christian mind-set" Chapter 13) laughed, cringed and cried while we read it. We think you will do the same.

The Wondering Years How Pop Culture Helped Me Answer Life Biggest Questions Knox McCoy 9780785220848 Books Reviews

So good and a needed voice. Honest wrestling with faith, with genuinely funny insights added. There are no answers necessarily, but rather an invitation to wonder, wrestle, and make faith your own, not something handed to you. For those who ask questions this is a perfect read. You will feel seen. My biggest take away was the challenge to show my faith of hope and love consistently, and address questions in an atmosphere of love and trust not pontification. I mean I used 10 book darts in a 200 page book. Once every 20ish pages I found something I didn't want to forget. Or maybe I did, but because it challenged me...I wanted to make sure to not ignore it. This will not shake your faith, but rather make it grow stronger. God can handle my questions. I may not like the answers, but that is not His fault, that is my own heart issue. Dig in, seek truth, grow your faith.
This book is incredible! I am honestly too young to appreciate a lot of the pop culture references, but it kept me laughing with hilarious references to the Denver Broncos, Grey’s Anatomy, Mean Girls, Friends, Carmen Sandiego, Legally Blonde, the Bachelor, James van der Beek, Vacation Bible School, and even canine evangelism. This book also perfectly explains what it’s like to grow up in church when you are an analytical child who takes everything very literally. Bonus It also has the best footnotes ever! 11/10 would recommend.
Having been a listener to the pop culture podcast Knox McCoy cohosts for almost four years, I told myself that I would love this book no matter what and that there would be no possible way to objectively review The Wondering Years. I was wrong. His insights, humor, and deep spiritual connections are something that I have revisited in my thoughts often since finishing the book a month ago. I can say that it is, indeed, objectively good. I cannot overstate how little interest I have in reviewing things on this internet. But this book was that good. Five stars!
The best comparison for this book is to Melanie Shankle and Sophie Hudson. Their writing reminds me of Knox McCoy in that it is funny, poignant, and it makes you think. This book is not funny in a light and fluffy way, and it sneaks a lot of truth and deepness into a small package. I am close to Knox's age and grew up in the same southern Baptist culture so I really resonated with his memories and reflections. I would recommend this book to anyone in the 30-45 age range who has questioned some things they learned as a kid once they hit adulthood. Great job!
After being an avid listener to Knox's podcast with Jamie Golden, "The Popcast with Knox and Jamie", buying this book was a no brainer. Let me just tell you that it 100% lived up to the hype. Knox is able to step outside of the "Christianese" lingo that so many books have these days to sort through how God and pop culture can coexist, and further, how pop culture taught him a lot about God. Knox has talent for discussing things that deeply matter (such as eternity, salvation, life, death, etc.) with levity and gravity simultaneously. Contrary to popular belief, that is actually possible, and Knox does it well in this easy, delightful read that actually makes you stop and take inventory of your own beliefs. 10/10 would recommend, even just for the "No Thanks" section at the end in the Acknowledgements. Why has no one else ever thought to do that? Hysterical.
I finished it in a couple of days, and overall it was a good read. It was enjoyable and made me chuckle at parts. I believe the author and I are the same age, or very close in age.

The references to pop-culture made me giggle, particularly when juxtaposed to the “Christian” up bringing of the 90s and all it’s awkwardness.

I flew through the first half of the book, nodding my head in agreement…then something happened, it started to get slow and deeper, not in a bad way…just in an I-don’t-think-this-is-what-I-signed-up-for way. It was still very well written and enjoyable, but it started to deviate from the pop culture parallels.

By the last chapter it was no longer entertaining. McCoy discusses his walk of faith much more and dives into dealing with his father’s cancer diagnosis. What started out as light and humorous made a complete turn around to something much deeper and serious.

Don’t get me wrong, it was still well written, but I felt that the last quarter of the book was a complete redirect from what I thought the book was. If I had known that, I probably wouldn’t have gifted it to my kid’s teacher.
I discovered Knox McCoy and his perfect brand of humor when I starting listening to his podcast "The Popcast with Knox and Jamie." I was excited to hear that he had a book coming out and even more so that it had a view of Christianity with a pop culture slant to it. I think that both Christians and non-Christians alike will find so much value in this book. The humor is on pointe, the life lessons are grounded in practicality, and it is just so so so good. I read this entire book in one night after my kids went to bed. I think if they would have been up when I was reading it they would have thought I was crazy because I was literally laughing out loud (something I never do when I read) and then I would cry at a particularly poignant moment and then I would laugh so hard again until I was crying. Perfection! I can't wait to re-read it and make some notes in the margin soon.
