This is a story about me, about who I am, about how I got to be me, and about the people who helped mold me in to Makayla Carlie.
There comes a time when life’s disappointments start to add up. When you can’t cry one more tear. When you can’t feel that surge of panic one more time, or when you can’t pray for one more day. You wonder, are we humans having a spiritual experience, or are we spirits having a human experience? What does it all mean? Do we all have a purpose? People said I was a hero—that I could persevere through anything I put my mind to. How could I be a hero when I never got a choice? Nobody asked me.
I did what I hope anyone reading this would do. While one life was taken too soon, another needed to live, really live. She needed to be the center of somebody’s universe. I was that universe. Just like the Pea under the mattress, I felt her.

This book can be read as a stand-alone.There is the ending that leaves you with a cliffhanger. But you don't need to read book two to be satisfied with these characters as book two goes into the past of relationships before.
This book starts out with Mikki on the run. It's all in her POV. So then we flip to the past and it keeps going like that.
Which leads up to the big reveal. The author did a great job of keeping my attention through the past and present merging into one Lifetime story.
Mikki for being 17/18 has had to grow up fast from her early teen years. She has been taking care of her sick mother for most of them. Her father is rich beyond belief and he's absent from their life.
That is til Mikki hatches a plan to make him acknowledge her.
From there things spin out of control and nothing goes as planned. Including her relationship with Blake. He works right under Mikki's dad and will be the perfect in.
That's until they develop feelings for each other while Mikki's playing nanny to London aka "PEA" and that name throughout the book, made me want to throw my kindle. The story was so well told, I had to keep going.
There are so many twists, turns and behind the scenes moments going on, you must read.
I don't want to give more away for fear of spoilers.
This is my first time reading this author. I was so hyped I went straight to book two and was disappointed. Not with the writing, just the story line that didn't revolve about the strong relationship these two, let alone all them should have.

Black Rain edition by Jettie Woodruff Romance eBooks Reviews
Mikki was young and impressionable. Mikki encouraged Blake to become his daughters nanny. Mikki taught Blake to see his daughter and become a good father.
After having lost her mother Mikki set out to find her father to fulfill her mother's wishes. During her journey she stumbled upon Blake where she acquired the position of nanny. London was the perfect remedy for Mikki's sorrow over losing her mother. An innocent child that relied on love and attention. Mikki suffered great pain at the loss of her mother. Mikki's character was a sassy smart mouth teenager who behaved impulsively. Mikki's journey led her to Blake and London where she taught Blake the responsibility of fatherhood. London taught Mikki how to find love again.
Throughout the story Mikki reminisced about fleeting moments with her mother. This was a nice way to introduce a loving character. These moments were shared in italics to identify easily. These scenes along with scenes between her and Blake were shared simultaneously. Mikki and Vicki were a team until Vicki was gone leaving Mikki to fend for herself. A teenager left to figure out adulthood with no female influence. Blake had a daughter named London. Blake's focus was not his daughter until Mikki made him see her.
It was an interesting beginning to the story. I had no idea the direction of Black Rain. With some references regarding the meaning of Black Rain I still struggled to piece it together. The story finally unfolded during the last ninety percent. It all came together bringing clarity to how it all began.
Kudos to Jettie for her vivid imagination. I'm reading along unsure what exactly I'm reading. I feel like I'm reading a compilation of memories. It's not a typical genre related story with definite elements. This was Mikki's journey after the loss of her mother. It's creative, unique, and unusual. It was cleverly written in an unsolved mystery fashion. Jettie definitely likes to surprise her readers with shocking information.
Everything happens for reason.
I have to applaud Jettie Woodruff as she is always working outside the proverbial box. Each book I read by her just kinda messes with my head and has me thinking hours after the last paragraph. Black Rain is no different.
While I cannot say that I loved this book, I truly cannot say that I didn't. This story, is a fast coming of age of a young girl who lost everything with the death of her mother. At just 17 years young, Mikki herself an instant nanny. An attempt to find or get close to her "father" lands her into another world. She had no idea that caring for a sweet, innocent neglected girl would bring her the family she so desperately needed. But she also did not know the events and the changes her life would take to get to a place of more.
I struggled with this book mainly because of the characters. Mikki is just 17...way to young to have the perspective and the sass to deal with a mature single father/weathly man-whore of a boss. As for Blake...just odd all-around. From hiring a lost sad girl to care for his young child, to propositioning the nanny for more. I think in the back of my mind I was reconciling the emptiness inside each character and for me their interactions were baby steps towards real intimacy and finally wanting more. At least that is h0w I pushed thru the tale hoping to get some human emotion from either Mikki or Blake.
I also was a bit disconnected with the back and forth telling of the story with past and present scenes. So much was happening and it seemed a bit fragmented. Perhaps that is why Mikki and Blake felt off to me. So again, it seems as if this would have a lower rating, but again...Woodruff tells a good tale. I liked the twists and turns and I like the mind games she plays. Just when I was happy with the conclusion, again there is another "bump" that just cant let the end play out.
