The struggles of Vadim is gut wrenching. It was interesting because he struggled internally as a young man and with his family and friends and externally from his oppressive surroundings, which made the story all the more appealing. I went through many emotions while going through Vadim's journey. At times I felt he was a bit pathetic and really pitied him. Other times in the story, I empathized with what he was going through and was able to relate on a much less grander scale, what the average person would sometimes normally go through the ups and downs in our lives. Jon did a great job of making Vadim human in the story, with all gamut of emotions. With that said, I did think there were parts that were a bit too political for my taste, although politics play a major element in Vadim's journey. There are a couple of choppy parts, but overall it is a pretty good book. I enjoyed reading it. Nice work Jon!Product details

In Derghistan, a post-Soviet country, the poverty, the vodka bottle, and the bleakness ring true for Vadim, who wants “to blast himself out of the hell.” Wexford’s use of description of the old Soviet satellite countries is shocking and vivid. In the end Vadim does escape from the clutches of tyranny and poverty but pays the ultimate price. The chapters were short and made for a fast read.
